Want to know the secret to building a profitable consulting/agency business?
... once I tell you, you’ll be looking for it everywhere.
It’s the methodology.
Here’s what I mean...
... if you do any consulting, and you’re just charging for the service (coding / design / copywriting, etc) then you’re getting paid for the hour.
If you have a methodology, then you can shift and start getting paid for the value you bring to that hour. (that’s a Jim Rohn quote btw)
In a consulting/service/agency business, your methodology becomes your product.
That’s how you scale the business.
Check out the examples of what a great methodology looks like.
Can it be as simple as taking an existing process like Agile Development and tweaking it to fit your creative approach?
The day you do this, then you have something special.
You also have something you can charge for.
That’s what I go over in this week’s video. How to actually get paid to do a proposal (or what I call a Roadmapping process).
That’s just 1 part of the 3 part framework for building a consulting agency that scales.
At a high-level it requires the following 3 components:
1. Roadmapping Process (Paid)
2. On-Going Services (Recurring)
3. Enhancements (A la cart)
Using this framework (or methodology :) you’ll be able to build very clear systems for your team to follow to ensure EVERY customer gets what they expect.
Anything out of scope is either referred to someone else, OR offered as an enhancement.
There’s also 3 major benefits to structuring your agency this way that will reduce the amount of frustration and challenges you’re likely having with your customers.
I cover those in the video ;)
If you have an agency and would love help naming your “Roadmapping” process, leave a comment here and describe what you do for customers and I’ll offer some suggestions.
There’s only one way to grow a business, build a repeatable / scaleable model... this one works wonders for agencies.
Keep up the great work!

ABOUT DAN MARTELL
“You can only keep what you give away.” That’s the mantra that’s shaped Dan Martell from a struggling 20-something business owner in the Canadian Maritimes (which is waaay out east) to a successful startup founder who’s raised more than $3 million in venture funding and exited not one... not two... but three tech businesses: Clarity.fm, Spheric and Flowtown.
You can only keep what you give away. That philosophy has led Dan to invest in 33+ early stage startups such as Udemy, Intercom, Unbounce and Foodspotting. It’s also helped him shape the future of Hootsuite as an advisor to the social media tour de force.
An activator, a tech geek, an adrenaline junkie and, yes, a romantic (ask his wife Renee), Dan has recently turned his attention to teaching startups a fundamental, little-discussed lesson that directly impacts their growth: how to scale. You’ll find not only incredible insights in every moment of every talk Dan gives - but also highly actionable takeaways that will propel your business forward. Because Dan gives freely of all that he knows. After all, you can only keep what you give away.
